06/11/1572 Ben Jonson`s life began in London on June 11, 1572 1598 Jonson killed an actor named Gabriel Spencer in a duel, and was arrested and tried at the Old Bailey on a charge of murder. He escaped death (hanging) only by claiming benefit of clergy, and was imprisoned. 1598 Every Man in His Humour (had a cast including William Shakespeare) 1599 Every Man Out of His Humour 1600 Cynthia`s Revels 1603 Sejanus, His Fall 1605 Jonson was appointed court poet 1610 The Alchemist 1614 Bartholomew Fair 1616 He was created poet laureate. 08/06/1637 Ben Jonson died on August 6, 1637 and was buried under a plain slab in Westminster Abbey. The slab was later inscribed with the words, "O rare Ben Jonson". |
